Employment, Work Placement & Volunteering

Working with us at HHPG.

Although we are not seeking new team members at the moment, most of our staff have come to us through work placement, a connection through an animal studies course or through volunteering with us or another animal organisation.

We encourage you to forward your resume with a cover letter outlining your animal care experience (and other experience) as well as the suburb you live in and outlining your availability.  Please note resumes with out a cover letter will not be forwarded to the HR department.

Carers must be 18 years with a drivers license in order to work at HHPG.

Work Experience (High school)

Please send us an email with your:

  • – Name, date of birth, address, and your resume and cover letter
  • – Year of study & school
  • – Preferred dates (please send through 3 options, we dont take more than two students per week)
  • – Number of hours of workplacement you need to complete
  • – A little bit about you, why you chose HHPG for your workplacement, what you’d like to achieve from your time with us and where you see yourself working in the animal industry

Please address all correspondence to our work placement coordinator, Lynda. Please ensure your emails are professional and detailed.

Once you (and your dates) have been tentatively accepted we ask that you come and meet us for final acceptance of your position.

Work placement (Certificate II or III)

Please send us an email with your:

  • – Name, date of birth, address, and your resume and cover letter
  • – Course & school
  • – Preferred dates or days
  • – Number of hours of workplacement you need to complete
  • – A little bit about you, why you chose HHPG for your workplacement, what you’d like to achieve from your time with us and where you see yourself working in the animal industry

Volunteering

Please send us an email with your:

  • – Name, date of birth, address, and your resume and cover letter
  • – Commit to a day or days and set hours (this can be discussed and finalised later)
  • – A little bit about you, why you chose HHPG for your workplacement, what you’d like to achieve from your time with us and where you see yourself working in the animal industry

Once you (and your dates) have been tentatively accepted we ask that you come and meet us for final acceptance of your position with us.

How to improve your chances of working in the animal industry:

  • – Be willing to volunteer
  • – Help a shelter, they always need help and you will learn many facets of the industry
  • – Do as many face to face courses / workshops / seminars paid and free etc etc as possible
  • – Open your mind and be willing to get your hands dirty!
  • – Get on to animal forums and FB pages and watch, listen and learn
  • – Show initiative (never send an email asking the potential employer to ‘reply to me for resume’. Nobody has time for that!)
  • – Ask if you can shadow staff to learn
  • – Be willing to start at the bottom
  • – Interact with local shelter or day care centres social media – you’ll learn lots!
  • – Help out at social days, adoption days, help with raffles etc and mingle with potential colleagues
  • – Ask if there’s anything extra you can do

If you are lucky enough to secure a position:

  • – Always be on time
  • – Dress neatly (ask what is expected)
  • – Be friendly, polite and professional at all times
  • – Follow all policies (particularly with privacy, confidentiality and phones in the work place)
  • – Ask for help, ask questions, you will learn so much quicker than if you didn’t ask for guidance and information
  • – And finally, be kind and caring to the animals in your care at ALL times – never ever put an animal in danger

What does HHPG look for in a potential employee?

  • – An assertive person who is compassionate and can show empathy and a gentle manner
  • – Professionalism
  • – A friendly team player who communicates well with management, colleagues and clients
  • – Someone who is flexible
  • – A drivers license and police check
  • – A trustworthy person – All staff must provide a police check at their own expense
  • – Someone who is willing to learn and improve their animal handling skills
  • – Someone who understands that their learning journey never ever ends!
  • – Positive, happy person who interacts well with both the dogs in their care as well as their team members

Getting to Hairy Hounds Playground

Train & Bus

  • – Williamstown North train station and Altona train station are the closest stops to HHPG
  • – 1 hour walk to HH (up Kororoit Creek Road)
  • – We recommend you catch the bus from the train station – bus line 415 (please double check in case of changes to the bus route)

Driving & Parking

There is ample on street parking at Hairy Hounds Playground. Please park on Tennyson Street and not on Bentley St. Bentley Street is a busy street with many businesses requiring short term parking spots in front of their businesses.
